Leighton Buzzard Men's First Team take a heavy loss against local rivals Luton in their final Pre-Season fixture

From the first whistle Luton were all over the visitors Leighton and it wasn't long before they opened their scoring account. Some quick attacking play by the home-side's forwards exposed Leighton's shaky midfield and confused defence, leaving the Leighton Keeper, Dan Metcalfe, unprotected as Luton slotted home their first of the day. The quick attacking play of the hosts continued to show Leighton's weaknesses and in quick succession two more goals were added to the Luton tally. A rare attacking display opened up the Buzzards best chance of the half in the form of a short corner, which they were unable to convert. As the half drew to a close Leighton spent most of their time on the back foot with Luton adding two more to the score sheet putting Leighton five goals down at the end of the half.
A stern word from Leighton's coach at half-time saw the travelling side going back to basics and looking to keep hold of the ball, however another lapse in concentration from the Leighton midfield enabled the home-side to score their sixth of the day. From here Leighton started to show the good quality hockey that they are capable of and another short corner was won. This was expertly struck by Man of the Match Tommi Lakins into the bottom corner of the Luton goal. From here Leighton kept hold of the ball much better and ironed out the lapses in concentration that they had been prone to in the earlier portions of the game. Some quick passing between Leighton Skipper Jack Gorton and Lakins saw Lakins catch the ball on the half volley and smash it past the helpless Luton Keeper and into the top corner of the goal for his second of the day. As the match drew to a close Leighton scored their third when Josh Farnfield deflected the ball high into the goal from a Leighton short corner.
With the season opener right around the corner Leighton will need to make sure they work out the kinks in their play or face a tough day away to Oxford Hawkes on the 29th September.
