Aylesbury Hockey Club Mens 2’s Vs Leighton Buzzard Hockey Club Mens 1’s

Leighton’s first game back in 6 weeks due to Christmas and adverse weather conditions saw them take on local rivals Aylesbury away at RAF Halton.

The away team started strong and put pressure on Aylesbury but a route one counter attack saw Aylesbury bobble the ball over the line and take the lead. Undeterred Leighton pressed on winning a penalty corner which was well saved by the Aylesbury keeper off a Nick Marshall drag flick, Aylesbury failed to clear the danger and Matt Rust won a second corner for the buzzards. Matt Franklin’s injection stopped perfectly by Jack Gorton allowed David Fry to drag flick the ball into the top corner of the Aylesbury net. 1-1. Leighton continued to pressure with Josh Gale nearly going through on the keeper if it wasn’t for a long reaching touch from an Aylesbury defender.

In the second half Leighton came out strong again and took full control with LB Keeper Dan Metcalfe only called into action once in the second 35mins. Wing play from Will Jenkinson, Lawrence Leech and Tony Puttock added to the width of the Leighton attacks. With 10mins to go Dan Edwards was green carded when he broke down an Aylesbury counter attack on the half way line. Once back to their full 11 Buzzards threw everything at Aylesbury Josh Farnfield’s pass finding Tommy Lakins who cracked an effort off the post. However Lakins would be the hero as Puttock slammed a ball into the D and Lakins one touch finish through the legs of the Keeper saw Leighton win 2-1 as the whistle blew only a minute later.
