Men’s 2XI (1) v West Hampstead 6XI (2)
Leighton travelled to a West Hampstead side who were flying high in the league sitting in 3rd place. Leighton started the game brightly determined to show their opponents the quality they possess. For the majority of the half Leighton dominated possession with their opponents being restricted to the occasional counter attack. Leighton’s possession was rewarded when Tim Bellamy hit a fine effort from the edge of the D after an initial save from the keeper. West Hampstead were clearly rattled by this and Leighton had a second effort ruled out by the umpires. Leighton went in at half time full of confidence leading 1-0.
The second half started with Leighton carrying on as they finished the first dominating the early proceedings. Unfortunately for Leighton the quality of their opponents began to tell with them seeing more possession and starting to get their shots on target. Despite this Leighton’s defence stayed strong with some good goalkeeping from stand in keeper David Thomson. Unfortunately after a succession of short corners against Leighton West Hampstead managed to score. This resulted in heads dropping and a second goal followed in quick succession. The game ended in defeat but Leighton can take some conciliation in this defeat with a good team performance with some great hockey being played.
