New formation pays off

Leighton Buzzard 2nd Team 3 - 0 Old Merchant Taylor's 3rd Team

Leighton looked to get back to winning ways as they returned to home soil, after two weeks on the road had resulted in no points. They knew it was not going to easy with their opponents desperate for points themselves. Buzzard came out of the traps quickly, using a new formation to force OMT back. It was only a matter of time until the deadlock was broken and the opening goal duly arrived following a well worked short corner falling to the returning Ash Barnett who found the bottom corner. Leighton went looking for a second and a number of chances were squandered, but the build up play was of the highest quality. The lead was eventually doubled when Man of the Match Stu Retford yet again picked off one of OMT's aimless long balls and promptly fed David Jackson who found strike partner Barnett who in turn located the unmarked Josh Gale who finished with ease. The passing and movement of the front three was something of beauty and the opposition were finding them too hot to handle.

Half time came and this gave OMT time to regroup. The opposition tried to impose themselves on Buzzard at the start of the second half; however the well marshalled defence of Tim Bellamy, David Wavish, Marc Scott and Joe Giltrow kept them at bay with some strong tackling. Whatever OMT threw at Leighton was negated and the opposition's frustrations continued to grow. This was only exacerbated when Leighton's slick passing through midfield resulted in skipper Jackson adding another goal to his season's tally to make it 3-0. A fourth almost followed when a committed Jackson dived headlong on the Vandyke beach looking to get a touch to a tantalising cross from the left. The final whistle soon followed with the three goals and a clean sheet putting the Buzzards into mid table (7th). The 2nd team have a strong performance to build on ahead of a tough trip to league leaders Ealing Lions next week.
