Weighed down by Christmas blubber, Leighton Buzzard 2s strode out onto the hockey pitch with the energy and grace of a Snorlax. Everyone had turned up on time for the clash against Aylesbury.
The first 10 minutes was filled with melancholia. The mid season break reared its ugly head as neither team seemed settled in possession.
All changed after David Canty charged into a swinging stick. He said he wanted to make a mark on today's game, pity that mark was the blood he left on the astro. As he left for the hospital, Buzzards swapped things around.
Shortly after, Matt Nash split the defence as open as Canty's skull, squaring the ball to Fraiser Retford who clinically found a hole under the goal keeper to make it 1-0.
The momentum gained from this prompted many attacks resulting in many a short corner. Tim Bellamy converted 2 with strikes that would rival Zeus' lightening bolts. A third coming from Nash's out-stretched stick to deflect in a more standard inaccurate shot from Bellamy.
Steve Fuller had been thundering up the pitch all game, making great runs. He was rewarded with his persistence, with a goal that I can't remember too well.
Annoyingly, a clean sheet was too much to ask for as a underperforming Aylesbury scrambled in a goal. Despite Liam Wavish's excellent surgical jabs, Clive Warncken's gentlemanly composure, and Will Riley's fatherly blocks.
The game ended 5 - 1 after a great performance from everyone on the team. The Man of the Match vote, at least, was be difficult to predict. Tim Bellamy towering performance clinched the award.
