Fledglings lose close game with Amersham & Chalfont 5s

Leighton Buzzard Fledglings 1 – 2 Amersham and Chalfont 5s

The Fledglings had a disappointing result in their last home game of the season. It was another tight game with divisional rivals Amersham but this time it was the visitors who came out on top.

The Fledglings started brightly enough, creating chances but failing to convert until David Jackson produced a moment of quality picking up the ball on the edge of the “D” and turning and shooting into the goal low to the keeper’s left. As Craig Gillespie and Sam Gale then enjoyed increasing success down the right hand side the Fledglings were able to keep this advantage until half time.

At the start of the second half Stuart Retford played the ball down the centre into the “D” for Peter Gale to shoot on the turn but unluckily the ball went inches wide. It was ill luck that would ultimately cost the Leighton side. As the Fledglings began to labour Amersham sensed an opportunity. With 15 minutes to go they equalised and then quickly grabbed a second.

The Fledglings raised their game for a last effort. Player of the match Henry Mead was a continual attacking threat down the left. Joseph Giltrow narrowly missed a Dave Jackson cross; then the Fledglings had the ball in the Amersham goal but unfortunately just as the whistle was being blown for a short corner; then the Amersham keeper stood on the ball preventing the Fledglings from getting an equaliser. It was clear it was not the Fledglings day and their last short corner came to nothing.

Credit to Amersham, a good side that deserved the win. Over the two close games between these sides, this season, one win for each was just about fair.
