Last home game ends in defeat

Leighton Buzzard Fledglings 1 - 4 Shefford & Sandy 3s & 4s

The Fledglings lost their final home game of the season, outplayed by a very composed Shefford & Sandy side. Though Leighton matched their opponents for effort, it was Shefford who created the goal scoring chances, converting two to take the lead at half-time.

Though weary, Leighton improved their own attacking play in the second half, with player of the match, Hugh Hatt-Lipscomb working tirelessly and Tony Farnfield tackling well and getting into good positions in wide midfield. Joe Giltrow and Peter Gale interchanged passes and nearly got through the Shefford back line. James Trumper shot just wide from his reverse side and it began to look like Leighton could find a way back. However the away side expertly converted two short corner moves to gain a very comfortable four goal lead.

With fifteen minutes remaining the Fledglings rallied again. Giltrow's run from midfield ended with a pass to Gale, whose diving shot surprised the keeper, hitting the backboard before he had a chance to react. More chances came but a nasty head injury to star defender John Field, stopped the game. Thankfully John is fine but afterwards Leighton lost some momentum and were unable to reduce the arrears further, despite going close on a few occasions. Unlucky to the Fledglings who might have got a bit more for their second half efforts but well played to Shefford & Sandy, deserved winners.

Final score: 1- 4 (Leighton lose, Shefford & Sandy win)
Player(s) of the match: Hugh Hatt-Lipscomb
