Fledglings claim first victory

Leighton Buzzard Fledglings 4 - 1 Harrow 2s

The Fledglings came through a bruising encounter with a determined Harrow 2s side to claim their first victory of the season.

The visitors started brightly and made the most of a short corner chance. A miss hit caused confusion in the Leighton D and the visitors reacted quicker to open the scoring. However Leighton responded positively and at their first penalty corner, player of the match, Adrian Gotzheim levelled with a powerful strike.

With half time approaching Harrow nearly retook the lead but the whistle went before the attacker could strike. It was the last significant threat to Leighton's goal and the Fledglings took advantage in the second half.

Another Gotzheim strike went close, with a Harrow defender injuring himself as he desperately tried to close down the shot. The Fledglings now made the most of their numerical superiority. Matthew Rust exchanged passes with Gotzheim and then crossed for Reece Cook to finish neatly as Leighton took the lead.

Following a great save, from debutant Alexander Dashwood, the excellent Joseph Giltrow picked the ball up in his own half and drove forward. Giltrow’s pass to the left was picked up by Cook; he crossed for Rust to clip the ball past the keeper and make it three.

Leighton's fourth goal came with five minutes to go when Peter Gale forced home Andrew Barton's cross from the right, at the near post.

So while they rode their luck in the first half the Fledglings made their luck in the second and ultimately deserved the win for their second half display.
