Disappointment at Wootton - lots of effort but no reward

Wootton Wanderers 2s 2 - 0 Leighton Buzzard Fledglings

The Fledglings were disappointed not to gain anything from a close game away at Wootton. On a slow, heavily sanded pitch the Fledglings struggled to find their passing range but great effort and determination kept the game even in the first half. Player of the match, Alexander Dashwood, made goal keeping look easy, while in front of him the defence of John Field, Terry Cavender and Stewart Angell worked well together to limit Wootton's chances.

Starting the second half more brightly the Fledglings created chances to take the lead. Joshua Farnfield's short corner strike was deflected goal-wards by Peter Gale but a Wootton defender stopped the ball on the line with an outstretched foot. A flick was awarded: however a great save from the Wootton keeper stopped Leighton from taking the lead. It was a turning point in the game.

Wootton attacked, a heavy challenge on Dashwood saw the young keeper knocked to the ground and with the goal unprotected Wootton finished well to take the lead. As Wootton pressed further Leighton struggled to find their passes and a break away goal from Wootton settled the outcome. The Fledglings rallied but despite putting Wootton under immense pressure for the final five minutes, it was too little too late to change the course of the game. Well done to Wootton but disappointment for the Fledglings.
