Leighton Buzzard Fledglings 6 - 2 Wycombe 6s
The Fledglings triumphed in a close fought game, sealing the win with three late goals.
Leighton started strongly taking the lead from a short corner when, joint player of the match, Joshua Farnfield fired home from the edge of the "D". However, Wycombe came back strongly equalising with an exceptional short corner of their own. Following an injury to Leighton's star right back, John Field, the Fledglings lost their way, allowing the opposition to take the lead, with a break-away goal. Crucially Leighton recovered quickly: following good work in the "D" by Matt Carter, Joshua Gale flicked the ball into the Wycombe goal to level the game before half-time.
The Fledglings then made a great start to the second half when, joint player of the match, Tom Billington drove into the Wycombe "D" and unselfishly crossed for Peter Gale to slap the ball into the goal. But again it was Wycombe who rallied creating a succession of great chances. Through a combination of David Jackson's good goalkeeping and good fortune, the home side survived, as the Wycombe attack misfired.
With ten minutes remaining Leighton added to their lead. Wycombe conceded a short corner and Matt Franklin exchanged passes with Peter Gale before firing the ball across the "D" and into the Wycombe goal. The Fledgling's fifth followed soon after when
great team play down the right hand side saw Peter Gale get to the by-line and pull the ball back to the "P spot" for Farnfield to flick the ball past the keeper for his second goal. Then with less than a minute remaining, joint player of the match, Tom Handley chased down the right hand side, seizing on to a loose ball and driving a shot past the Wycombe keeper for a well deserved goal. Although the score line flattered Leighton, it was another determined performance from an improving Fledglings side.
