Strong defence gives Leighton a narrow victory

Aylesbury 5s 0 – 1 Leighton Buzzard Fledglings

The Fledglings held their nerve to overcome a determined Aylesbury side. The Fledglings opened brightly winning the ball from the Aylesbury push back and breaking down field. Nicky Marshall picked the ball up in side the “D” and passed it on to Peter Gale. Gale spun round and his diving shot, though lacking pace, was well directed and beat the keeper for Leighton to take the lead, with less than a minute on the clock.

It was the key action of the game. The rest of the half was even, with Leighton creating pressure but unable to find killer accuracy with their passes and Aylesbury looking threatening on the break. Tom Billington worked tirelessly and James Trumper looked to provide an outlet down the left hand side, linking with midfielder Joshua Farnfield.

Leighton made substitutions at the break and Matt Carter, Trumper and Marshall all had opportunities to increase Leighton’s lead. However, in the end it was the assertive goalkeeping of Alexander Dashwood and defensive covering of Peter Marshall and Terry Cavender that ensured the Fledglings went through the game without conceding.

Final score: 0 – 1 (Leighton Win)
Player(s) of the match: Peter Marshall, Tom Billington, Alexander Dashwood
