Wycombe 6s 3 – 0 Leighton Buzzard Fledglings
The Fledglings’ recent good run came to an end away at Wycombe. The home side got off to a flying start, converting a short corner within the first minute. Leighton struggled to come to terms with a fast, bouncy, wet pitch and a fast, fluid opposition. And it wasn’t a surprise when Wycombe increased their lead with two further first half goals.
Gradually Leighton worked their way back into the game. Strong work from Tony Farnfield and John Field, got the Fledglings moving forward. Joint players of the match Tom Handley and Joshua Farnfield played with power, skill and determination and combining with midfield dynamo Tom Billington created chances for the forwards. Unfortunately, James Trumper and Peter Gale both shot wide when well placed. Gale then won a short corner and Leighton thought they had scored. But with Joshua Farnfield’s strike heading for the bottom corner a defender just got a touch on the ball to send it millimetres wide of the post. It was the closest the Fledglings came to getting a goal.
Despite Leighton’s second half efforts, it was Wycombe who were the better side and deserved winners on the day.
Final score: 3 - 0 (Wycombe win, Fledglings lose)
