A win away from home

An early away match for the ladies 2s saw them continue their winning form with a 2-0 win over Broxbourne. A little caught out by the unfamiliar pitch, Leighton found themselves playing end to end hockey, with the talents of keeper Amber Kelly stopping a couple of Broxbourne chances. The defence of Sally Retford, Lisa Patrick, and Andii Chandler combined skillfully to manage the players who were stretching the play through the first half. With Leighton gradually pushing up the pitch, they started to create opportunities. The breakthrough came when Siobhan Henessey made a tackle on the 25, and drove to the D to cross for Chloe Alecock, who swept it into the backboard to take it to 1-0 at halftime. Leighton came out the stronger team, with midfielders Lauren Avery, Chrissie Dixon and Gemma Jones combining to control the play and move the ball wide and up the wings. Leighton put on pressure, including Emily Smith's driving up the pitch, Sarah Ayres chasing down a long ball to bring it back into danger, and player of the match Kyrsty Hardy's interception of a 16, but none resulted in a goal. The pressure did result in a foot on the line from Broxbourne, and a flick being awarded that Lucie Webster calmly stepped up to convert. The match finished at 2-0, and Leighton remain second in the league
