Leighton Buzzard Ladies 3 XI faced Tring Ladies 2 XI at home this week.

This week Leighton Buzzard Ladies 3rd XI faced Tring 2nd XI at their home pitch. With a number of changes to the squad this year the ladies side were eager to go out and win their second league game of the season. Having lost to Tring in their previous encounter in the February of the last season, Leighton knew that the match would be a good test of their development and the new players.

From a slightly slow start, the Leighton side soon picked up the pace, and within 10 minutes were well into the Tring defence. Putting the pressure on the Tring side Leighton took several chances on goal, which to their avail did not come off. Despite the warm climate and the bright sun, Leighton continued to make attacking runs from their 23 to the Tring goal.

With the first half being a closely fought battle the score sat at 0-0 the half-time whistle.

Starting the second half, Leighton were quick to attack the Tring goal and a superb shot saw Sarah Whelton score the first goal of the match, and her second this season. After resetting, the Tring side were clearly eager to make the score level, but despite the Tring attempts the Leighton side showed the strength of their defence with a brilliant save from goalkeeper Jo Wells.

As the second half continued, both teams fought hard to bring about opportunities on one another’s goals. As the Tring side began to tire, Leighton’s energy seemed to increase and following some excellent team play by the home side Sarah Whelton was again in a great position to put another shot on goal, increasing their lead to 2-0.

As the second half came to a close there was a tense moment as Leighton defender Caroline Hill twisted her ankle, forcing her to come off the pitch in the 68th minute. As the final whistle was blown the Leighton team cheered at their 2-0 win.

Following an incredible tough 14/15 season, it was clear that the home side were very pleased with the win and their game play this week is a good indication of things to come. Most voted player was awarded to Caroline Hill for her tireless defensive effort. Next week Leighton Buzzard Ladies 3 XI face Shefford and Sandy away at 1pm.
