Leighton play a strong game despite defeat.

Leighton Buzzard Ladies 3 XI faced Shefford and Sandy away this week. Having lost out to Shefford and Sandy on their previous away visit, Leighton were keen to come out strong to the team that are currently second in the Division 2 league. The match was an opportunity for two of the Fledglings players at the club, Ella Felstead and Ashleigh Hennesay-Kemp, to play with the ladies team.

Leighton started the first half well, and showed the strength of their attacking skills as they made headway into Shefford and Sandy’s defence. However, the strength of the home team soon became apparent as SS reacted to Leighton’s attacks with a shot on goal, putting the score at 1-0 to Shefford and Sandy.

Starting again, Leighton Buzzard made good use of their mid-field and forward line by pushing the ball up with good passing and runs. To their avail the Shefford mid-field and defence proved to be too strong and soon the home team had scored for the second time in the first half. Despite fantastic goalkeeping by Martine Frost and some very well played defence by the Leighton side, Shefford and Sandy saw their opportunity again, and a great shot on target saw another goal in their favour. As the half time whistle blew the score was 3-0 to SS.

The second half saw more chances for the Leighton side, with great attacking work by all the team and brilliant team work by Rachael Clark and Sarah Whelton up-front. Unfortunately the home team proved to be the stronger side and increased their lead to 5-0. Despite the loss, the score in no way reflected the efforts and hard work by the Leighton Ladies 3 XI. Most voted player was deservedly awarded to Martine Frost for her brilliant goal keeping skill!
