Leighton were looking to put last week's draw behind them and get their season back on track against West Herts. Leighton started on the front foot and passing the ball with confidence and pace. The ball transferred through the midfield of Katie Jackson, Nel Maize Brown, Mel Merola, Emma Shuttle and Anna Carter and left the opposition chasing shadows on occasions. It was only a matter of time until Leighton broke the deadlock and Terri Payton got the opener that their play deserved.
What followed was some periods of good hockey and some that Leighton might want to forget. Leighton had a number of chances to increase their lead and provide themselves with the buffer required. Jackson, Sharon Avola and Lucie Webster went close to extending the lead but the margin remained just one goal. Nerves set in and West Herts looked to hit Leighton on the break but the defence held firm to ensure that three points were secured and the 2s are now only 2 points off the promotion places with a key game against fellow challengers Bishops Stortford next week.
