Two more cup finals to go!

The Mens 2nd Team were looking to keep promotion hopes alive after a loss to second in the table Windsor last week, knowing a win was vital to keep the pressure on. They welcomed Oxford to Vandyke, having won every game at home so far.

Leighton started brightly, moving the ball around a young Oxford team. It was only a matter of time before a breakthrough for leighton, which came when Tom O'Reilly found Martin Bailey at the back post, who slotted it away calmly to put leighton 1-0 up. The second followed shortly after, with good play from Matthew Nash and David Jackson to set Steve Fuller through on goal, who pushed it passed an onrushing keeper. Leighton had a well deserved third and fourth before the half’s end. The third coming from a good reaction from Jackson following a Tim Bellamy shot at a short corner. The fourth came from a good powerful strike into the D from Bellamy, with Kevin Abranches’ cute deflection giving the keeper no chance. Oxford had the chance to reduce the deficit just before the break when given a penalty flick, however a good save from Jim Galloway kept Leighton 4-0 up at the break.

The second half was a slower affair with Leighton defending well and keeping the ball. The defence of handley, Fraser Retford, O'Reilly and Will Riley were solid at the back, with MOTM Liam Wavish keeping the Oxford forward in his pocket with timely tackles and overall excellent play. The midfield 3 of Bellamy, ‘grandad’ Clive Warncken and Bailey marshalled the Oxford team, and the front 4 of Nash, Jackson, Abranches and Fuller working hard to create more chances to score. A harsh green card for Fuller for not being 5 secured him as DOTD. A fifth goal half way through the second half was well deserved, with Fuller deflecting a Bellamy short corner at the back post. Oxford had one back in the last few minutes with a strike from a short corner, however leighton won this game comfortably. On to next week for another vital home game against Amersham & Chalfont.
