Hard fought win puts 2nd Team two points off second

After a hard fought away win last week Leighton looked to build some momentum at home against fellow promoted side Marlow. Starting brightly, the front three of Dan Wright, Stephen Fuller, and Dave Jackson dominated the Marlow defence with pace and carved out numerous chances that flashed just wide or were well saved. After about 15 minutes of this the frustration seemed to tell and Leighton began to lose the midfield battle with uncharacteristic loose passes. Despite Marlow pressure and the temporary loss of Will Riley (after head butting an opposition stick) the backs and Jim Galloway in goal weathered the storm, and by half time Leighton were back in control even if the score was still 0-0. The second half began in a similar manner with some very attractive moves from Leighton out wide, and destructive work in the centre from Laurence Leech. With Clive Warncken and Martin Bailey shutting down the midfield, and an effective press Marlow were reduced to a barrage of arials, well fielded by Liam Wavish, Riley and Tim Bellamy dropping back. A long range Marlow goal against the run of play was quickly cancelled out after good work by Dan Wright, as Leighton refused to panic, and the winner came after a goal mouth scramble 10 minutes from time with Bourne finishing well. There was just long enough for Leighton to unnerve their captain by pushing forward but they held on to lead themselves 2 points off second place.
