Wootton Wanderers 2s 0 - 2 Leighton Men's 3s

A much changed side (how many times Dear Reader have I said that this season?) but a somewhat stronger one took to the field to take on a strong, high flying, Wootton side. From the start Wootton unleashed a ferocious assault on the Leighton goal, but the defence held firm. Slowly Leighton gained control of the all important midfield. With this control, backed up by a strong defence, Leighton pushed forward and mounted an increasing number of effective attacks . Mid way through the first half Leighton were awarded a short corner which was defended by Wootton but which led to another short corner. This time Stuart Hart pushed the ball out to Dave "Hooky" Hooker who slotted the ball back to Hart who slipped it around the Wootton Keeper to score Leighton's first (20minute). The rest of the half continued in the same vein with Leighton dominating and Wootton launching counterattacks very few of which penetrated far into the Leighton defence.

The second half started as was to be expected from a high placed team such as Wootton. They launched a number of hard hitting attacks but the Leighton defence were still standing firm. Again midway through the half Pete Marshall the 3s skipper started off a marvellous attack down the left which ended with Steve Fuller running in to put the ball past the Wootton keeper for Leighton's second (55 minutes). That very largely took the heart out of Wootton and Leighton were able to stay in control to the end of the game. This was really a great team performance with every one working hard to get the points. An important win which could push Leighton 3s to 3rd place at the end of the season.
