Leighton 3s overcome Oxford 7s

In a close first half both goal keepers showed their quality. Leighton's Jim Galloway controlled the edge of the "D" and cleared the ball with authority, while Oxford's keeper made a series of outstanding saves to prevent the home side from scoring. Level at half-time it was all to play for in the second half.

Leighton were determined to score the first goal and were rewarded with a short corner following great work and close control from David Jackson. Jackson then injected for, man of the match, Stuart Retford to fire a flick past the keeper and open the scoring.

With Tom Handley attacking from the wide right and Daniel Wright attacking from the wide left Leighton enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure and further short corners. A second goal came when Retford slipped the ball to Toby Ashfield who slapped the ball across the "D" for the on rushing Wright to lift a deflection past a stranded keeper.

Though the Buzzards were good value for their lead they couldn't relax; Oxford scored a high quality goal when the ball was fired in from distance and an unstoppable deflection flew into the roof of the Leighton goal. Both sides attacked but with Retford winning the ball in the centre and distributing with great accuracy Leighton kept creating good chances.

A further short corner saw Retford pass the ball to Peter Gale who controlled the pass on his reverse turned and flicked the ball past the Oxford keeper's right hand, as Wright's clever run across the goal distracted the defence. Though Leighton had to work hard to hold onto the lead, the conceding of a third goal was too much for Oxford to recover from and Leighton gained a much needed win.
