Ladies 1st XI vs Saffron Walden 2's

The second league match of the season on paper seemed like a tough draw for the Leighton side. Saffron Walden are not a team to be laughed at, in the previous season they narrowly missed out on promotion. With a couple of players missing from their core squad this week the ones were very pleased with the willingness from other players to step up and help out.

The game started fast, Leighton with an overwhelming percentage of possession. Attacking play after attacking play but no goal. The Leighton side managed to remain strong and not allow themselves to become frustrated, their efforts were rewarded about 15 mins in when Gabbie Avola slapped home a beautiful goal from a perfectly worked short corner routine.

More attacking play from the Leighton side continued and it was only a matter of time before they would add to the score sheet. This time the goal came from open play, Kathy Connolly finishing off Gemma Jones's run and slightly amusing skills which she assures were completely intended.

This would be the end of the goals but with still another 35 mins left it wasn't the end of the game. The midday heat was in its element and taking its toll on both sides, Saffron Walden losing a casualty to exhaustion. Leighton maximised their substitutes and worked hard for each other to maintain the lead.

Goalie Ruth Edards was called into action making a lovely save and assisting in maintaining the ones clean sheet record. Whilst defenders Andi Chandler and Natalie Walter working well together at the back to prevent Saffron any additional opportunities at goal.

The girls will go away very pleased with this result, next week the ladies face Stevenage 2's away.
