Double flicks

This week Leighton Ladies 1st XI had a home match against Tring 1’s. The team also welcomed back two players from injury this week, Clare Jackson who suffered a broken hand in pre- season training and Ellen Baldwin who also succumbed to a hand injury a few weeks ago.

The ladies went out hard and were attacking the Tring goal from the first push back. Their efforts were rewarded with a short corner which hit a Tring defenders foot on the line. With no Clare Fitboydon this week Hollie Taylor stepped up and took the flick and calmly slotted it past the keeper to open the score 11 minutes in.

Gabbie Avola never one to miss out on goals then had a one on one with the keeper to increase the score to 2-0.

It really wasn’t the week for Clare Fitboydon to be away as low and behold another flick was awarded to the Leighton side. This time Hollie Taylor was off the pitch so Katie Jackson stepped up and increased the score to 3-0. Clare Fitboydon will have a fight on her hands to keep that role now.

Last play of the game before the half time break and Kirsty Scrivener slapped in the 4th goal whilst having a run out upfront.

4-0 up and refuelled by Jelly Baby’s™ the Leighton side came out hungry for more goals. However the Tring side pressed high and put pressure on the Leighton side making it difficult to work the ball out of defence. The Tring side secured a number of consecutive corners but were unable to convert these chances due to the superb goal keeping from Rachael Kinchett.

54 minutes in and a Tring player was awarded a Green card for failing to back off 5 yards before making a tackle from a free hit quickly taken. The Leighton side seized this opportunity and overloaded play and got into the Tring D securing two short corners. Both of these were converted by Hollie Taylor.

Tring had another run of short corners and converted a well-deserved goal with 10 minutes left to play which was deflected into the goal and left the defence with little time to react.

Leighton side had a few more attacking runs but were unfortunate not to convert any more goals.

Player of the match this week was close between Rachael Kinchett and Kathy Connolly but Connolly secured it for her brilliant running and distribution of the ball in midfield.

Next week Leighton face currently second in the table Welwyn away and are looking to further secure their spot at top of the table.
