Going against Leighton’s usual explosive starting form, Bishops Stortford started the match meaning business. Charging into Leighton’s defensive D within the first moves of the game, what shortly followed was a well executed strike from a clearly experienced front line, resulting in Leighton Buzzard conceding twice in the first 10 minutes of the game. At this point, heads could have easily dropped, but instead it ignited the fire within Kirsty Scrivener who bounced back scoring two nicely worked short corners bringing to scores level at half time. This could have gone a very different way had Player of the Match Laura Keable not been on the goal line for two incredible saves preventing the visitors going into the lead.
The second half became slightly more frantic, both teams trying to claim the lead. Gabbie Avola was the first to hit the backboard giving Leighton the lead for 5 minutes before Stortford came back again. Tensions rose and the umpires clamped down with a zero tolerance approach seeing Hollie Taylor and a Stortford player receiving green cards for seemingly minor but repeat offences. Both teams down to 10, for two minutes, Hollie’s return to the pitch saw her sprint in and get her goal for the match taking the lead with minutes to go until the final whistle. Bishops Stortford weren’t going to back down without a fight and managed to break against the flow of play to get the final equalising goal of the match. Final score 4-4.
