Leighton Buzzard Ladies 1st Team vs Oxford 2s

Leighton Buzzard 1st XI started their league run playing against Oxford 2’s. The pre-season preparation had gone well for the ladies but nerves were evident across the squad. From the start of the fixture Oxford were attacking and immediately put the 1’s under pressure. The team rallied together but Oxford were a tough side to play against. Eventually Gemma Jones hassled well for the ball, drove towards the goal and slipped a lovely ball to Gabbie Avola who slotted the first goal away, bottom corner. Unfortunately it wasn’t too long before the opposition penetrated Leighton’s defense and scored an equalizer. It was clear that the Ladies 1st X1 needed to compose themselves and work harder across the pitch to be available for each other if they were to get a result from the game.

The team started the second half well and began to relax a little more as well as achieving a few more attacking short corners. Thankfully, after a defensive error by Oxford, Leighton Buzzard 1st X1 were awarded a penalty flick. Karmel stepped up and with a lot of pressure to score a winning goal, fired the ball through the keepers legs.

It wasn’t a classic today and it was not quite how the girls know they can control a game but the final result was 2-1 to the Ladies 1st XI so it was a marvelous 3 points for the first game of the season.
