On another uncharacteristic hot day in October, Leighton Buzzard Ladies 1st XI took on unfamiliar opposition in Newbury & Thatcham 1s as this was their first meeting in the newly formed South Central Women’s Division 1 North league.
Leighton started with intent and Kirsty Scrivener slotted home an early opportunity to give the home team an early lead. This was quickly followed up by Leighton Buzzard earning a penalty corner which was powered home by Karmel Brazier from the top of the D to double the lead.
Both teams battled to the half time whistle with neither side making the most of the chances made.
After the break Leighton allowed Newbury &Thatcham to take the initiative which they seized to half the lead, and they continued to push for the leveller which they found much to Leighton’s disappointment. With over a quarter of the game to go both teams continued to battle it out, with Leighton switching the momentum as the final whistle edged near and were awarded with a penalty flick after a goal ward shot was stopped on the line by an opposition player. Unfortunately, the Newbury & Thatcham goalkeeper saved the chance which meant the teams finished two goals and piece.
The result sees the team sitting fifth as we go into the half term break.
