Leighton lose away to Stevenage 2s

We got going as soon as possible with our team warmup, after which Pete gave our team talk. With some short corner practices done, we were ready to start the game.

We held much of the possession in the first quarter, with leading runs from Sarah and Emily D. After a sustained press on the Stevenage defence we managed to get the ball in the D, resulting in a shot on goal. We caged the goalie in to get the deflection, which Emily S successfully scored. We continued battling hard, winning some short corners. Nevertheless, Stevenage managed to push the ball into our half. Strong tackles were made by Neve, but in the end they scored a goal - leaving the score at 1-1 at the end of the half.

After a positive team talk we went back out and worked hard, despite the heat. Their press on our hit-outs was challenging but Tara managed to get through with skilfully lifted passes. Chrissie and Anna worked well in the middle to feed the ball out to the wings leading to some great chances. Stevenage had a few short corners but Ellen’s running and Jo’s protection of the goal prevented most of these from being scored. Sadie made some impressive runs up front, though we were unable to score another goal. As we grew more tired Stevenage stormed down the pitch and managed to score. We held them off successfully for the remainder of the match. Overall, a tough game but our team spirit was unrelenting and everyone worked their socks off to get back when needed.
